How to plan ahead despite future uncertainty & restrictions imposed by COVID-19

Blogs from The Third Way Working Group

・Things to be taken into consideration when we plan for business:
⇒ Remote working style to stay as a new norm of work.
⇒ Team is geographically dispersed and possibly over different time zones.
⇒ Office space will be reduced. (Dentsu just announced its head office building is on sale.)

These are typical issues we still observe in Japan
⇒ The corporate culture is still reflected even people work remotely. Unhealthy/ineffective culture will stress employees even more in remote work.
⇒ Japanese tend to spend too much time on planning. Now being unable to predict the future, we should focus more of Action of PDCA rather than P.
⇒ Planning should be more agile and flexible. We can not plan rigidly upfront.
⇒ Still many companies seem to be clinging to their wishful thinking about the future such as the Olympics, Covid-19, Japanese economy etc and not taking a hard look at worse/worst possibilities.

Tips
⇒ Be ready for disappointment. Prepare for the worst. Self-expectation has be properly managed. Be ready to respond to unplanned/imagined events.
⇒ Get used to shorter time spans. In the US, people lose jobs, get jobs and get paid in two weeks. In Japan, people lose jobs, get jobs and get paid in 20 years! Japanese need to adjust their mindset to the faster-paced VUCA world of the 21st century.
⇒ Don’t try to live your life/develop your career based on the external environment. Focus on developing yourself based on your true strength so that you can survive in any environment in the future.
